Hundreds helped at Hank's HomeSafe GA foreclosure prevention event

Rep. Johnson connects struggling homeowners with HomeSafe program, HUD-approved counselors for second event in 2012

LITHONIA, GA – More than 400 people participated in Saturday’s HomeSafe Georgia foreclosure prevention event at Salem Bible Church in Lithonia hosted by Congressman Hank Johnson, along with representatives from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs and HUD-approved counseling agency D&E.

Rep. Johnson held a similar event on April 28, 2012, in which hundreds of homeowners were helped.

HomeSafe is designed to provide temporary assistance to Georgia homeowners who are able and willing to work but have suffered a substantial income loss due to involuntary unemployment or underemployment.

The event also provided opportunities for homeowners to meet with counselors to see if they are eligible for a loan modification.

“We want everyone here, regardless of your situation, to leave today armed with knowledge and hope that you will be able to save your home,” Johnson told the crowd. “That is our mission and our goal. Don’t’ give up – see this process through. We want everyone here to leave optimistic and prayerful and that each one of you gets the help you need today.”

More than a year ago, Georgia received $340 million from President Obama’s “Hardest Hit Fund”– known as HomeSafe in Georgia – to help unemployed homeowners avoid foreclosures. Johnson said at the time not enough was being done to get the word out and to get the funds where they are needed most.

“Since our first HomeSafe event in April, many more people are getting the help they need through HomeSafe,” said Johnson. “It’s a credit to DCA Commissioner Mike Beatty, Governor Deal and events like this one. We have to continue reaching out until everyone gets the relief that they really need.”
