Statement on Egypt, the Middle East, and Israel

“Watching the popular uprisings in Egypt, Tunisia, and other countries throughout the region, it is clear that the future political landscape of the Middle East will be very different. As events continue to unfold on the streets of Egypt, the United States affirms our continued commitment to an open and democratic society that is responsive to the needs and freedoms of all Egyptians.

“Egypt has long been an important regional partner for the United States, and we hope that any new Egyptian leadership will continue to be an ally in the global effort to combat terrorism and radical extremism. Just as a newly democratic Egypt should uphold the freedoms and human rights of its own people we also expect that it upholds its regional commitments to leadership, stability, and peace with Israel. The relationship between the United States and Israel is unshakable, and developments in Egypt will not alter our special relationship nor lessen our absolute commitment to Israel’s safety and security.”
