Windward Community College to receive $460,000 to help disadvantaged youth go on to college

Thu, June 14, 2012

WASHINGTON - Windward Community College (WCC) on Oahu will receive $460,000 to help disadvantaged youth complete high school and go on to college, Senator Daniel K. Inouye, Senator Daniel K. Akaka and U.S. Representative Colleen Hanabusa announced today.

The money will be used to support 500 students enrolled in the Educational Talent Search Program at WCC.  The Educational Talent Search Program provides academic, career, and financial aid counseling to children needing the help to succeed in high school and college.

"The Educational Talent Search Program levels the playing field for disadvantaged and at-risk students by providing them the tools to achieve academic success," said Senator Inouye.  "I am happy that the Educational Talent Search Program gives all students, regardless of their background, the opportunity to excel in school and go on to college."

"Every student deserves the opportunity to learn, improve their lives, and contribute to their communities." said Senator Akaka, a former teacher and principal.  "I am so pleased that the Department of Education will be providing these critical resources to help talented but disadvantaged students on the Windward Coast."

"Taking the next step on the academic path can be overwhelming for any student, especially for those who come from challenging backgrounds. The Talent Search Program provides Hawaii's disadvantaged students with the educational support and guidance they need to successfully complete high school and continue on to college. Education has the power to change lives, and I would like to thank the Administration for their continued investment in our students," said Congresswoman Hanabusa.

The funding comes through a Federal TRIO Program grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
