WASHINGTON - The Hawaii Department of Health will receive grant funding in the amount of $6,818,950 to increase health preparedness capabilities throughout the state Senator Daniel K. Inouye, Senator Daniel K. Akaka, U.S. Representative Mazie K. Hirono and U.S. Representative Colleen Hanabusa announced today.
The funding comes through a Hospital Preparedness Program grant and a Public Health Emergency Preparedness Program grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
The money will be distributed to the counties by the state.
"To ensure public safety, we must prepare for, and be capable of rapidly responding to public health emergencies," said Senator Inouye. "With state budgets stretched thin, this funding is critical to maintaining safe, healthy communities. As an isolated state, we are vulnerable to disease outbreaks - whether caused by natural, unintentional, or intentional means - and these threats can overwhelm health care systems. The grants will support key partnerships between federal, state, and county agencies that will help Hawaii better prepare for, respond to, and recover from public health emergencies."
"It is crucial to the safety of Hawaii and its residents that our health care institutions be properly prepared and capable to operate under emergency situations like a terrorist attack. These funds will help to enhance the ability of our hospitals and healthcare systems to plan for and respond to public health emergencies, increase integration of public and private sector medical assets in the case of an emergency, ensure that the state has adequate surge capacity, and make improvements to infrastructure critical to responding to an emergency. This important program could help to save thousands of lives in Hawaii," said Senator Akaka.
"It is critical we have the capability to respond immediately to a variety of potential threats or emergencies. This federal investment will help the Hawaii State Department of Health protect our families from unknown substances and biohazards that could endanger public safety. The investment will help Hawaii's hospitals keep emergency equipment stocked, and will make sure Hawaii has the computer technology and lab capacity to quickly respond," said Congresswoman Hirono.
"As an island state, it is important that we are prepared for threats to our community's health, security, and wellbeing. This award will ensure our public health and emergency response systems are ready to anticipate, address, and rapidly recover from disaster.
