Washington - U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) announced today that Southern Illinois University Carbondale has been awarded a $199,999 University Coal Research Program grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. The funds will be used for continuing research on value-added products from sulfite-rich FGD scrubber materials.
"SIUC is a leader in clean coal research and this project will continue to advance our knowledge of how to burn Illinois coal efficiently and cleanly," Costello said. "A major focus of my work in Congress is centered around promoting the development of clean coal technologies to meet our current and future energy needs, so this funding is important not only for SIUC, but for our region and the nation as well."
