Chester, IL - A Chester veteran was honored posthumously by receiving his military medals on Thursday, March 24, 2005 by U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello, (D-IL). Congressman Costello presented the medals to the family of John Jungewaelter Jr. at a ceremony held in Congressman Costello's Chester District Office located at the Chester City Hall.
Mr. Jungewaelter, who passed away in 1998, served in the U.S. Army in World War II. He participated in military operations in Rome, Arno and the Northern Apennines. He was wounded in Italy in 1944 making him eligible to receive the Purple Heart.
Among the medals that were posthumously awarded to Mr. Jungewaelter are; Purple Heart, the Good Conduct Medal, the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, the American Campaign medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign medal, the WW II Victory medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Honorable Service lapel pin and the Marksman Badge and Rifle Bar.
Mr. Jungewaelter's family contacted Congressman Costello's office asking for his assistance in securing the medals for his daughter.
