Washington, D.C. – This morning, Congressman John Tierney (D-MA) spoke before an estimated 300 people, including business board chairs and the executive directors of the nation’s 600 workforce investment boards (WIBs), at the National Association of Workforce Boards (NAWB) annual meeting of workforce professionals. Speaking in advance of next week’s expected House floor action on the Fiscal Year 2011 spending legislation, Tierney emphasized that now is not the time to cut funding for programs that ensure our workers are sufficiently skilled and prepared to be hired for the jobs of today and tomorrow.

“Doesn’t it seem like we all should be able to agree that in the middle of a recession, with unemployment holding at well over nine percent, now is the wrong time to cut funding for employment and training programs that put people back to work? But – unfortunately – it seems that the new House Republican Majority is planning cuts in precisely those areas . . . We must fight it,” said Congressman Tierney.
