BERKLEY COMMENT ON COURT RULING AGAINST HEALTH REFORM LAW

(January 31, 2010 -- Washington, D.C.)  Congresswoman Shelley Berkley today issued the following statement in response to a federal court ruling that struck down the new health reform law.

"I disagree with this court ruling and am concerned about the impact it will have on Nevadans who will no longer be protected against insurers dropping them once they get sick or denying them coverage if they have a pre-existing condition.  We already know what happens when Nevadans cannot afford health insurance or are denied coverage.  These men, women and children visit the emergency room for treatment and that only increases the cost of premiums for everyone who has health insurance now.  Those applauding this ruling are ignoring the cost to communities like Las Vegas from caring for the uninsured and they are turning their backs on cancer survivors, juvenile diabetics, seniors and others who this law helps by providing guaranteed access to affordable health coverage.  I am disappointed by this decision which comes as yet another setback in our effort to cover more than 600,000 uninsured Nevada residents and to improve access to care and increase affordability for those who are now insured.  I support an immediate appeal of this mistaken ruling and hope that the Affordable Care Act is upheld."
