Statement: Congresswoman Speier on Supreme Court’s Decision to Hear Cases on Same-Sex Marriage

December 7, 2012

SAN MATEO, CA - Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco/San Mateo) released the following statement today after the Supreme Court announced that it will hear two cases related to same-sex marriage. The cases challenge the constitutionality of California’s Proposition 8, which sought to overturn the state’s marriage equality law, and the Defense of Marriage Act which narrowly defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

“Denying same-sex couples the same rights and privileges that heterosexual couples can enjoy betrays our core values as a country. The Supreme Court should rely on the 14th Amendment that guarantees equal protection for all.”
