  4. I'll be talking about the Fiscal Cliff negotiations with Eliot Spitzer on his show Viewpoint tonight.

While we wait for a deal on the fiscal cliff, Congress should do the right thing and pass a bill to protect the middle class and small businesses from tax increases.

  6. My heartfelt condolences to the family and fans of Jenni Rivera, the legendary Mexican-American performer who died in a plane crash in Mexico on Sunday. Jenni Rivera was born in Long Beach, California and was an icon for Mexican-American women and a role model for all women.

That will destroy you…. The number of times I have fallen down is the number of times I have gotten up.” Powerful message.

  10. The day after the attacks on Pearl Harbor, President Franklin Roosevelt delivered this speech to the United States Congress.

To the Congress of the United States:
Yesterday, Dec. 7, 1941 - a date which will live in infamy - the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.

The United States was at peace with that nation and, at t...
he solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with the government and its emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific.

Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in Oahu, the Japanese ambassador to the United States and his colleagues delivered to the Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent American message. While this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or armed attack.

It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time, the Japanese government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. Very many American lives have been lost. In addition, American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu.

Yesterday, the Japanese government also launched an attack against Malaya.

Last night, Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong.

Last night, Japanese forces attacked Guam.

Last night, Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands.

Last night, the Japanese attacked Wake Island.

This morning, the Japanese attacked Midway Island.

Japan has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the Pacific area. The facts of yesterday speak for themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation.

As commander in chief of the Army and Navy, I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense.

Always will we remember the character of the onslaught against us.

No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory.

I believe I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost, but will make very certain that this form of treachery shall never endanger us again.

Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that that our people, our territory and our interests are in grave danger.

With confidence in our armed forces - with the unbounding determination of our people - we will gain the inevitable triumph - so help us God.

I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, Dec. 7, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese empire.

  11. Today we remember and honor the 2,402 Americans who were killed and the 1,282 who were wounded during the attacks on Pearl Harbor 71 years ago. A date which will live in infamy. We also celebrate the patriotism and sacrifice of the millions...
of Americans who joined and supported the military during WWII.

One wartime reporter in Hawaii, Betty McIntosh, wrote her account of the attack on Pearl Harbor for a women’s magazine. But, the editors felt it was too graphic to publish at that time. Today, 71 years later, you can read her chilling article in the Washington Post.

I will be monitoring the loss of life and damage from Typhoon Bopha and make sure our government is there to provide whatever aid we can.
  15. Former Supervisor Mike Nevin was a giant in politics in San Mateo County. His passion was unbridled, his compassion boundless and his love for those without inexhaustible. He breathed new life into the Service League and left a powerful imprimatur on hundreds of issues and programs in San Mateo County.

Mike had a huge heart and he was proud to show his emotions. How often do you hear someone fro...
m law enforcement appeal for understanding on behalf of ex-offenders? Literally with tears in his eyes, Mike would do so. He was wise. He was iconoclastic. He was a leader by example. I loved him and admired him greatly.

God knows best why Mike has been taken from us at such a relatively early age, but perhaps to remind us that time is scarce so we need to all be Mike Nevins - to do well by others - with the time God grants us.

My thoughts and prayers are with his wife Kathy and his children Michael and Michelle.

  16. If Congress fails to act before the end of the year, we will go over the fiscal cliff. That would mean that every American family would see a tax increase of about $2,000. How would your life change with $2,000 less of disposable income? What would you forego?

  18. I'll be talking about my Stop Harming Our Kids resolution live on CNN today at 2:35pm ET. Young people should be protected from the psychological abuse of so-called LGBT conversion practices.

"Ex-gay therapy" has been rejected as scientifically invalid by the American Psychiatric Association and other mental health groups for nearly 40 years.
  19. Today I introduced the Stop Harming Our Kids (SHOK) resolution because being gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered is not a disease to be cured or a mental illness that requires treatment.

Any effort to change sexual orientation is not...
medicine, it’s quackery, and we should not be supporting it with taxpayer dollars.

Conversion or reparative therapies are based on the lie that being gay or gender non-conforming means that something is wrong and needs to corrected. This view has been rejected as scientifically invalid by the American Psychiatric Association and other mental health groups for nearly 40 years.

California led the nation on this issue when Governor Jerry Brown signed SB 1172, a law that prohibits state licensed mental health professionals from engaging minors in these harmful and abusive therapies. Governor Brown did the right thing and I am urging all states to consider similar laws.

The SHOK resolution encourages each state to take steps to protect minors from efforts that promote or promise to change sexual orientation or gender identity or expression, based on the premise that homosexuality is a mental illness or developmental disorder that can or should be cured.

I am also investigating whether or not federal taxpayer funds have been spent on the practice of conversion therapy with minors through Medicaid or TRICARE reimbursements.

In my cursory investigation, I have found two additional instances of so-called mental health professionals that advertise these services and appear to be eligible for federal dollars. This morning, I sent letters of inquiry to Medicaid and TRICARE to determine if these instances reflect systemic weaknesses that allow federal taxpayer dollars to go to harmful, illegitimate medical services.

  21. Parents- before you head out to the toy stores this holiday season I recommend that you take a look at the PIRG’s 27th Report on toy safety for important warnings about unsafe toys, which I have linked to here. There are far too many toys still on the shelves that contain unsafe substances like cadmium and phthalates, pose choking hazards or can lead to hearing loss due to excessive noise. I urge you to educate yourself before you buy!

  24. Did you know that half a million Americans lose electricity for at least two hours every single day simply because our electric grid is antiquated? Our grid of about 360,000 miles of transmission lines and 6,000 power plants was built in the 1950s. The Department of Energy warns that 70% of the largest high-voltage power transformers are more than 25 years old and subject to high risk of failure. It’s time for a smart grid.
  25. It’s Small Business Saturday the day when shopping small does big things for the local economy. Did you know that 68 cents of every dollar you spend at a locally owned business stays in the community? You’ll find me on main streets througho...
ut San Mateo County tomorrow going from shop to shop picking up gifts for my family and friends.

Our small businesses are the cornerstones of our main streets here in San Mateo County and towns across the country. We can all support them as consumers here at home and I am also working in Washington to help our small businesses succeed by working on legislation to level the playing field between brick-and-mortar retailers and online-only stores. Online-only retail stores are able to charge nearly 10% less on items because they do not have to collect the same sales taxes that local small business do. This is unfair and it needs to change.

Here in California, we’ve already confronted Amazon.com and worked out an agreement to ensure that Amazon will collect sales tax on purchases made by CA residents. But, other online-only stores still enjoy a major pricing advantage over our local small businesses.

I’m cosponsoring e-fairness legislation that will require all online stores to collect sales taxes just like our local shops do. The bill will also make it easier for consumers to pay sales tax on goods purchased online - the online stores don't charge them, but we still owe that sales tax on our annual tax return!

The bill is called the Marketplace Equity Act and you can learn more about it here: http://1.usa.gov/ME7QKf

Since I will be driving home from a family Thanksgiving today, I will do my small business shopping tomorrow and report back to you.

Why don't you post what you bought from a small business in your town?
