Udall Welcomes Senate Action on Sportsmen’s Package, Shooting Range Provisions

Bill, Which Expands Public Shooting Ranges, Overcame Obstruction by Senate Republicans

Posted: Saturday, September 22, 2012

Mark Udall welcomed U.S. Senate action today on the Sportsmen’s Act, S.3525, which includes Udall’s Target Practice and Marksmanship Training Support Act, despite attempts earlier this week by Senate Republicans to derail the bill. Today’s procedural vote means the Senate will consider S.3525 for final passage when it returns for a lame-duck session in November. Udall’s bipartisan provision would give states greater flexibility to use the funds collected on sporting equipment and ammunition to create more accessible ranges for safe target practice and recreational shooting – all without costing the taxpayer a dime.

“This bill and my shooting range proposal are good news for Colorado hunters and sportsmen,” Udall said. “The Target Practice and Marksmanship Training Support Act is a bipartisan, common-sense proposal that improves shooting-range access for sport shooters and hunters. I look forward to completing action on this package to give Colorado sportsmen greater access to our public lands and create new, safe and well-managed areas where they can responsibly practice their sport.”

The U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation including Udall’s Target Practice and Marksmanship Training Support Act bill in June.

Sportsmen groups across the state as well as the Colorado Springs Gazette and the Boulder Daily Camera have provided critical support for Udall’s proposal.
