Introduction to the 112th
Congress |
With the 112th
Congress now officially underway, I wanted to send you a quick
update. Committee assignments for the new Congress have
been announced, and I am pleased to inform you that I will be
continuing my service as a senior member of both the
Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the Science,
Space, and Technology Committee.
On the Transportation
and Infrastructure Committee, I will serve as the Aviation
Subcommittee's lead Democrat and will also serve on the Water
Resources and Environment Subcommittee and the Subcommittee on
Railroads, Pipelines and Hazardous Materials. We have
important legislation to address, including the FAA
Reauthorization bill, the Water Resources Development Act and
a new highway bill. I am committed to working closely
with our new committee leadership on these issues, which play
a critical role in our efforts to improve the economy.
I also look forward
to my work with the Science, Space, and Technology
Committee. At the request of the committee's leadership,
I will serve as Acting Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on
Space and Aeronautics while its newly elected Ranking Member,
my good friend Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ),
continues her recovery. I look forward to Congresswoman
Giffords' continued work as the Subcommittee's Ranking Member
when she returns to Congress, and I am honored to serve in her
absence.
In addition to the
critical work being undertaken by these committees, I am
looking forward to serving as a co-chair of both the
Congressional Coal Caucus and the Congressional Levee Caucus
during the 112th Congress. In these leadership roles, I
will continue my efforts to advance clean coal technology in
Illinois and nationwide, and I will work to ensure that our
communities have time to address their levee and flood
protection needs. These are critical national issues
that play a particularly important role in our area, and I
will continue to make them a priority.
