  1. On Friday, the president called on Congress to work towards a plan that "protects unemployment insurance for 2 million Americans". We need to get this done. Check out this article in The Hill Newspaper to see what Ways and Means Committee Democrats have to say about extending UI benefits.

Failure to pass an extension of federal unemployment insurance before the end of the year is "totally unacceptable," said Rep Sandy Levin.

“My concern is not who has the upper hand in D.C., but that the hands of 2 million Americans will be empty of any insurance payment if Congress fails to act by Saturday, January 5," said Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas).

What has happened to America? This is not the country I grew up in. The United States of America, after painful evolution and civil war and depression, evolved into a nation where people, all people, are theoretically equal, where class is scorned and opportunity and justice for all is heralded. Will the rule of wealth and power, the wealth and power of a tiny few, prevail over our bitter struggles for opportunity and equality? I pray not. But the power to make a difference apparently resides in the conscience of Republican politicians and their backers, and tragically it seems they're willing to destroy their own country and ruin the lives and health and futures of millions of their fellow Americans in order to reward the rich simply for being rich. I never thought I'd see this here in America. It's a terrible thing, something that's happened to republics before, but one had thought we were safe from this kind of destruction from within. Perhaps reason and compassion will yet prevail.

  3. 9 days until the Federal Unemployment Insurance program ends and 2 million people lose this vital lifeline while they look for work and House Republicans are wasting precious time debating a bill that is silent on UI and provides a $50,000 tax cut to the very wealthiest instead of negotiating a comprehensive and balanced solution with the President. Here is Rep Sandy Levin's floor statement from today.

  5. Today Congressional Democrats held an event with unemployed workers on the urgent need to extend the federal unemployment insurance program. Without Congressional action, more than two million Americans will be cut off federal unemployment insurance completely on December 29th.

Thank you to all who have shared your stories, which are helping to put a human face on the EUC. At the press conference, Rep Sandy Levin said, “The problem is that for too many two million is just a number, instead of two million individuals with stories. I have no doubt that if the stories could be told, this institution would live up to its responsibilities.”
  6. Have you or someone in your family lost a job? Are you struggling to find work or to learn new skills?

How have unemployment insurance benefits affected your life? Have they helped you pay your bills or stay in your home?

What kind of job training or reemployment assistance programs are in your community? Did you receive training or job search assistance?

    Share your story.

Ways and Means Committee Democrats want to hear your thoughts on extending federal unemployment benefits and on proposals to create new jobs, including proposals made by the President. Through this eforum we want to gather the information Congress needs to understand conditions in American communities across the nation.
