Johanns: Republican Conference Resolutions Show Commitment to Fiscal Responsibility

WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Mike Johanns (R-Neb.) today released the following statement after the Senate Republican Conference voted to continue or implement a number of fiscally responsible resolutions for the upcoming Congress:

“Nebraskans want less spending and less debt,” Johanns said. “Senate Republicans are committed to those goals. Continuing our earmark ban and calling for a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution show just how strong that commitment really is.

“It’s my hope that the President and Senate Democrats will join us, because finding a solution to these problems will take their commitment as well.”

The continued and newly adopted resolutions are below:

  • Continue the earmark moratorium and challenge Democrats to adopt an identical earmark moratorium;
  • Continue the moratorium on unfunded mandates and new entitlement spending programs;
  • Continue the Conference’s support for a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution;
  • Continue the Conference’s support for a cap on non-defense discretionary spending at 2008 levels;
  • Ensure surplus office funds are used to reduce the deficit rather than being diverted for other purposes, as is current practice.
