Larson Statement on Equal Pay Day

WASHINGTON –House Democratic Caucus Chairman John Larson (CT) released the following statement on Equal Pay Day today, which marks how far into the year a woman must work, on average, to earn as much as a man earned the previous year:

“If our country is to emerge from the Great Recession stronger than how we entered it, we need an economy that rewards hard work fairly regardless of gender. With middle class families still reeling from the recession, it is unacceptable that so many of our mothers, daughters, and sisters are paid less than their male counterparts.

“While progress has been made, whether at the state level – like the Pay Equity Laws passed by the Connecticut General Assembly while I served as Senate President - or the federal - with the passage of the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act - women in America still make thousands of dollars less, on average, than men. Obviously, there is much more work to be done to ensure a fair workplace for everyone.”
