Congress Must Keep Student Loan Rates From Doubling
Unless Congress acts now, student loan rates will double in thirty days. Yet behind closed doors today, Speaker John Boehner told Republican Members of Congress that they would do nothing to find common ground with Democrats on keeping student loan interest rates low, because it wasn’t what they wanted the election to be about.
News flash to Speaker Boehner: Governing isn’t about winning elections. It’s about helping Americans succeed. And, this deeply cynical move by House Republicans will only make it harder for students who are already struggling in this difficult economy to get ahead.
House Democrats will continue to fight to on behalf of American families who are rallying behind the cry of #DontDoubleMyRate. It’s time for Congress to come together to take action now and do what’s right for students and middle class families by keeping rates low.
