Washington, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren (IL-14) today voted to repeal a burdensome, anti-jobs section of the 2010 health care law, which would have imposed substantial regulatory burdens on small business owners.

“Today’s vote was a victory for commonsense and the American public, as it repealed legislation passed by the last Congress that threatened to overwhelm our small business owners with an avalanche of paperwork and bureaucracy,” said Hultgren. “At a time when Congress should be doing everything it can to create a favorable environment for job creation, the 1099 provision would instead have been one of the most egregious anti-jobs, anti-growth provisions within the enormously flawed health care law.”

The cost of complying with the 1099 provision would cost each business an estimated $74 an hour. The provision would have applied to 40 million entities, including nonprofit organizations and government, as well as business.

“Time and time again, I heard from my constituents about the need to repeal the 1099 provision, and I’m pleased we had the opportunity to do so today with so much bipartisan support. Instead of forcing small business owners to bear the enormous cost of the health care law, I hope Congress will now act to empower our small business owners, so that they can focus on putting Americans back to work.”

The repeal legislation, H.R. 4, will save taxpayers an estimated $166 million over ten years, and will reduce federal spend by roughly $20 billion over the same period.
