Homeland Security
On September 11, 2001, terrorists attacked our nation and our democratic values. They sought to break our spirit, but they did not succeed. The American spirit that moved us to action also calls on us to stand together as one people, rich in diversity and united against terrorism. We must not submit to fear or prejudice as the terrorists are counting on for their propaganda purposes. Instead, we should demonstrate our commitment to democracy, to justice and to tolerance. At home and abroad, we will act swiftly and strongly to defend our country without sacrificing our most cherished values.
As a member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, I continue to work for policies that keep Americans safe; that give Michigan communities the tools and support they need to protect their citizens; and that are consistent with American values. I am concerned about the need to strengthen security along the northern border, including the need for greater cooperation among security and law enforcement agencies with border responsibilities.
