A Good Day for America and Vermont

“The Supreme Court decision upholding the Affordable Care Act makes today a good day for Americans and Vermonters. It is a good day for those who have pre-existing conditions who can no longer be rejected by insurance companies,” Bernie said.  “It is a good day for families with children under 26 who can keep their children on their health insurance policies.  It is a good day for women who can no longer be charged far higher premiums than men.

“This decision is especially good for the state of Vermont because, with the receipt of hundreds of millions of new federal dollars in coming years, we will more easily be able to move our state to a Medicare-for-all, single-payer system which guarantees health care to all people in the most cost effective way.”

Expanding Primary Health Care

Bernie celebrated the completion of the federally funded $11.3 million expansion of the Community Health Centers of Burlington.

The health care law upheld by the Supreme Court includes a provision Bernie fought for that will dramatically expand community health centers in Vermont and across the country. More than 120,000 Vermonters now obtain their health care through one of eight Federally Qualified Health Centers that provide affordable primary care, dental care, low-cost prescription drugs and mental health counseling. A new $11 million community health center just opened in Burlington. Further, a grant recently was awarded to the first community health center in Addison County.

A Look Back: George Aiken (1892-1984)

George Aiken

As many Vermonters struggle to recover from the deepest recession in generations, George Aiken’s Inaugural Address as Vermont’s governor -- delivered 75 years ago amid the Great Depression -- holds true today. Aiken said retiring Vermonters “saw the savings of a lifetime, which might have made their declining years more comfortable, wiped away while they were helpless to prevent it.” He called for an expansion of “old age assistance” to help Vermonters in need.
