Rebuilding Vermont

Senate Measure Would Deliver
More Than $400 Million
to Rebuild Vermont's Roads and Bridges

Bernie is pushing for legislation, debated this week in the Senate, that would deliver $408 million to Vermont to help address a backlog of repairs needed for Vermont's roads and bridges. Vermont Transportation Secretary Brian Searles joined Bernie for a press conference this week to discuss the legislation. “Not only will these funds help rebuild our crumbling infrastructure, but, in the midst of a severe recession, this bill will create hundreds of thousands of good-paying jobs throughout the country,” Bernie said.

Vermonters line up for a town hall meeting with Bernie in Jericho

“Our Definition of Democracy” — More than 200 people packed the Jericho Community Center to join Bernie for a town meeting to speak about how to rebuild our manufacturing sector, transform our energy system, and create good-paying jobs. “When we become motivated, when we have the political will to solve problems, there is no end to what we can do,” Bernie said. Many of those who attended also agreed with Bernie that we must strengthen our democracy by reversing the Supreme Court’s disastrous Citizens United ruling. The packed community center, Bernie said, is “our definition of democracy.” This Sunday, Bernie is holding a town meeting in Charlotte. Next month, he is planning town meetings in Bristol and Randolph.

Restoring Vermont’s Farms – The flooding following Hurricane Irene decimated the fields of hundreds of Vermont’s farmers. This week, an additional $2.6 million of federal funds have been dispatched to help restore and rehabilitate Vermont's farms through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Emergency Conservation Program. That brings the total Vermont farmers will receive through this program to $4.7 million.

Are You Eligible For A Major Tax Credit? — More than 11,000 eligible Vermonters did not apply for the Earned Income Tax Credit last year. They missed out on an average federal tax credit of $1,752. Families who earn less than $49,078 a year may qualify.  Nearly 45,000 Vermont families received the credit last year. “With the economy struggling to recover from the deepest recession since the Great Depression, it is important that Vermonters know about this valuable credit which could help thousands more Vermont families than is currently the case,” Bernie said.
