Sen. Sanders Spearheads Effort to Bring National Lab to Vermont

a $15 million, three-year commitment to a new Center for Energy Transformation and Innovåçation
Sen. Bernie Sanders and Gov. Peter Shumlin announced a $15 million, three-year commitment to a new Center for Energy Transformation and Innovation at the University of Vermont. The partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy's Sandia National Laboratories has the potential to discover innovative ways to save energy, help the environment and boost the economy. "My hope is that Sandia will help Vermont develop cutting-edge technology in energy efficiency and sustainable energy and in the process create new jobs by expanding existing businesses and helping new ones to develop," Bernie said. "One of the mandates of Sandia is to help the private sector and we look forward to them working effectively with Vermont companies."

A moratorium for the USPSSave the Post Office
The U.S. Postal Service has agreed to a request by Bernie and other senators for a five-month moratorium on closing postal facilities and laying off tens of thousands of postal workers. Congress now has until May 15 to consider comprehensive postal reform legislation, including Bernie’s Postal Service Protection Act. The Sanders bill would modernize the Postal Service to help it succeed in the 21st century and prevent massive job loss. “The post office must adapt to the challenges of the digital age, but we must do it in a way that makes it stronger and more responsible to the needs of consumers. And not just cut, cut, cut,” Bernie said.

Reverse the Citizens United rulingSaving Our Democracy
A constitutional amendment by Bernie would reverse the infamous Citizens United ruling that let corporations secretly spend unlimited sums on election campaigns. "Let me be very clear," Bernie said. "Despite what five members of the Supreme Court believe, corporations like Bank of America and Exxon Mobile are not persons and do not have the constitutional right to spend unlimited sums of money to buy elections. That is not what American democracy is about."
