West Augustine Community Revitalization

Rep. Mica is currently working with local community and government leaders to address concerns about the living conditions in West St. Augustine.  Along with St. Johns County officials and Community Redevelopment Area (CRA) representatives, Mica has outlined several initiatives that he would like to see pursued in the area:

          1.  Stricter code enforcement to resolve sanitation and health safety issues, focusing particularly on trash litter, abandoned buildings and makeshift dumping sites.
          2.  Implement a plan to install a drainage system and retention pond, which will help eliminate standing water in ditches and relaxed environmental issues.
          3.  Commence with redevelopment plans for the West King Street business area, as well as other projects that improve the quality of life in the area.
          4.  Target illegal drug and substance abuse problems in the community.

On April 24, 2009, Rep. Mica attended the dedication of the Solomon Calhoun Community Center located on Duval Street in West Augustine.  The new facility consists of an 8-lane swimming pool, splash park and office space.  Future plans for the community center include recreation complex with baseball fields and a dog park.

?In the past Rep. Mica secured $350,000 in federal funding to help eliminate failing septic systems and address stormwater drainage problems with the installation of a new central sewer system which will benefit West St. Augustine.  The funds used to correct the drainage issues allowed the land where the Solomon Calhoun Community Center now stands to be developed.
