St. Augustine Airport

As former Chairman of the U.S. House Aviation Subcommittee from 2001 to 2007, Rep. Mica worked with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Florida Department of Transportation and St. Johns County to improve safety at this municipal airport, which is one of our key economic generators.

In 2009, Rep. Mica announced a $2.5 million grant to St. Augustine airport for paving and widening of the airport taxiway and lighting improvements. Recently, in March of 2010, Congressman Mica helped the airport to secure a FAA grant of $4.5 million to fund 3 major projects. The first is to repair the embankment on the runway’s southeast end, where the marsh comes up to the airport. The second project is the extension of Taxiway B, allowing large aircraft to run to the end of the runway. And finally, posts for an Instrument Lighting System are to be placed in the marsh, which would provide guidance for aircraft in poor weather.

The airport is used by both civilian and business aircraft and is also home to Northrop Grumman’s Integrated Systems plant, one of our community’s largest employers.

While some are concerned about future development and expansion of services at this General Aviation airport, Congressman Mica has focused his efforts on helping the airport to remain a good neighbor to the surrounding community and to ensure safe flight operations.
