St. Augustine 450th Anniversary Commemoration

St. Augustine, our nation's oldest continuous settlement, was founded in 1565 and will soon celebrate its 450th anniversary. To commemorate this special occasion, Congressman Mica introduced the St. Augustine 450th Commemoration Commission Act in 2007 to help plan and launch special events and programs. This legislation was included in a Public Land Management Bill and became law on March 30, 2009.

The 450th Commission, which is currently awaiting confirmation by the Secretary of the Interior, will lead our effort to increase the historic profile of our community, increase tourism and provide a boost to the local economy. The Commission will host many activities in 2015 celebrating St. Augustine's founding by coordinating with Spanish, federal, state and local entities to ensure the city's history and legacy remains an important part of our nation's great story.
