DeBary Memorial Park

The dedication of DeBary Memorial Park honoring Airman 1st Class Brian W. McVeigh was held on Memorial Day, 1999.  The ceremony included flyovers from Eglin Air Force Base and the Confederate Air Force and Presentation of Colors by VFW Post 8093.

Brian, a resident of DeBary, was killed on June 25, 1996 in the terrorist attack of the Khobar Towers in Saudi Arabia.  Both he and Charles Richard Beall, also from DeBary and killed in Vietnam, were honored with plaques now on view at Memorial Park.

Congressman Mica worked with the local, federal and Saudi governments to help obtain an F-15 Eagle aircraft, similar to those used by Brian's squadron, as the center-piece of Memorial Park.  During the dedication, Brian's mother, Sandy Wetmore, presented DeBary city officials and Rep. Mica with plaques thanking them for their efforts.

Nearly 600 area veterans and residents attended.  Also present were Brian's father, Jim Wetmore, Charles' parents, Jesse and Arbutus Beall,  Volsia County Commissioner Ann McFall and Big John.

Memorial Park is located at Dirksen Road and Buena Vista Street in DeBary. Open from sunrise to sunset, the 2.5 acre park includes paths for strolling and pavilions for picnics.  The F-15 and the USS Langley's anchor are prominently displayed and, along with the hill garden, are brightly illuminated each night.
