DeBary Creek

Currently, at Representative Mica’s request, the Army Corps of Engineers is working to complete an ecosystem restoration project in the vicinity of DeBary Creek.  Before this project can begin, a study must be completed that will provide the best options economically and environmentally for pursuing this important restoration project.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the Engineering Research and Development Center (ERDC), a division of the Army Corps of Engineers, signed a Memorandum of Agreement in the Fall of 2008 that stated that ERDC would provide a study to determine possible solutions for removing sediment buildup around DeBary Creek.  The cost of the study is approximately $100,000 and FDOT is providing the funding.

ERDC has begun work on a preliminary draft of the proposed study plans and will meet with State and local leaders in the near future to plan a site visit in October 2009.  The site visit will allow ERDC to meet with FDOT, DeBary residents, St. John's Water Management District and DeBary city officials to discuss the study process.

The study is scheduled for completion in Spring 2010.  At that time, the Army Corps of Engineers will recommend specific plans for the proposed ecosystem restoration project at DeBary Creek.  Representative Mica is working with his colleagues in the House of Representatives to secure any federal funds that will be needed to complete the restoration project when the Corps of Engineers makes its recommendation.
