Bethune-Cookman College

Rep. Mica is working to secure funding in 2010 for renovation of the Bethune-Cookman University Gross Science Hall in the School of Science, Engineering and Mathematics.  The first renovation since 1972, the School of Science, Engineering and Mathematics provides specialized training for students majoring in biology, chemistry, computer engineering, computer science, mathematics, and physics.

?Preliminary federal funding of $250,000 has been approved in the House of Representatives.  If approved by the Senate, the funds will update and expand a 10,000 sq ft wing of aging laboratories, classrooms and equipment in Gross Science Hall.  These upgrades are needed to provide the increasing numbers of B-CU students majoring in STEM fields with up-to-date technology and modern equipment.

The upgrades will include two “clean” labs, safe spaces for the storage of chemicals, modern ventilation equipment, electronically enhanced lecture classrooms/theatres integrating computer, multimedia, and network technology, and “ill” feature technologies that help the environment and reduce energy costs.

In March of 2009 Congressman Mica announced federal approval for $333,000 in federal support for the Bethune-Cookman University School of Nursing Renovation Project.  In announcing the funds, Rep. Mica said, “The nursing industry is important to our health care industry, and with a nation-wide shortage of nurses, attracting and educating young people for this profession is important to maintaining quality health care in our country.”

Bethune-Cookman University is a Historically Black College and University institution that is working to renovate a 37,000 sq. ft. facility to house the expansion of the School of Nursing.  The building will include Smart Classrooms, Simulation and Skills Laboratories, a Lecture Hall, Seminar and Conference Rooms, Administrative and Faculty Offices and the innovative, community focused Wellness Center.

Previously, Rep Mica has assisted Bethune-Cookman with funds to build the Fine Arts Center, a Student Union/Community Service Center, and a Continuing Education Center in the town of Hastings, located in St. Johns County.
