Health Care

There is little doubt that health care in this country is in need of reform. However, the $1.2 trillion bill passed by the last Congress will not solve most of the problems now confronted by all Americans. Instead, this bill will saddle future generations with even more debt that they will struggle to repay. Also, the legislation forces individuals to purchase health insurance. This is the first time in our nation’s history that the federal government has forced individuals to purchase a product from a private company. This sets a troubling precedent and represents an enormous increase in federal power.

As a solution, I support  common sense reforms that will reduce costs and increase access to health care for all Americans. First, individuals should be allowed to purchase health insurance across state lines. Second, small businesses should be encouraged to ban together to purchase insurance, increasing their market power. Finally, once individuals find a plan that works, they should be allowed to keep it, even when they change jobs. We must also have lawsuit abuse reform and put an end to frivolous lawsuits that clog our judicial system and raise our health care costs.
