Bonamici Votes for Six-Month Continuing Resolution

WASHINGTON, DC – Today Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (OR-1) voted on two important measures to manage the federal budget – H.J.Res. 117, Six-Month Continuing Resolution (CR), and H.R. 6365, the National Security and Job Protection Act.

Congresswoman Bonamici voted for the CR, which will continue funding government agencies, programs, and services at their current levels of operation through March 27, 2013. Introduced with bipartisan support from the House, Senate, and White House, the CR will temporarily avoid a government shutdown. It maintains critical funding for programs like FEMA Disaster Relief, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, and wildfire suppression efforts by the Interior Department and Forest Service.

“I’m pleased that we were able to come together and pass a temporary solution to our budget crisis,” Bonamici said following the vote. “By putting off the ultimate task of agreeing on a final appropriations bill for the next fiscal year, however, we miss an opportunity to discuss targeted investments for our country and we contribute to uncertainty."

Congresswoman Bonamici also voted against the National Security and Job Protection Act, which would alter the previously-enacted sequester by protecting defense spending while maintaining the cuts to critical social service programs.

“My colleagues and I do not want the sequester to go into effect,” Bonamici said, “but unconditionally removing cuts from just one area is not the way to avoid it. I am committed to tackling our debt and deficit with a balanced approach, and I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to arrive at a solution that reflects the interests of our nation as a whole.”
