Federal Resources

Thank you for contacting my office regarding your Fiscal Year 2012 Appropriation requests.  In the past, I have worked diligently to secure federal funding for worthy projects throughout the First Congressional District.  Together, we have successfully funded many important efforts to improve our infrastructure, community colleges and police departments, and to help seniors and veterans.

While I strongly support the Constitutional right of members of Congress to direct investments to their states and districts under a fiscally responsible and transparent earmarking process, unfortunately, I will be unable to submit such requests this year.  President Obama vowed to veto any legislation with congressionally directed spending, and House and Senate leaders have also announced a two-year moratorium on earmarks.

As we move forward and the consequences of this moratorium are fully understood by the American people, I remain hopeful that this issue will be revisited.  Given the needs of North Carolina’s First Congressional District, I will continue to urge my colleagues to engage in a fair, responsible and transparent earmark process that allows legislators to exercise their Constitutional rights to help meet the needs of their constituents.
