Casework

Providing assistance to the citizens of the First Congressional District is one of my top priorities.  If you are experiencing problems with a federal agency, my office may be able to assist you.  While we cannot ask a federal agency to do anything that it would not normally do in accordance with its rules and regulations, we can assist you in working with the agency to ensure that your rights are respected, and that errors in your record or procedure are corrected.

Before contacting our office for casework assistance, please consider the following:

1.  Are you a resident of the First Congressional District?

  • As a Congressional courtesy, Congressman Butterfield is only able to help residents from the First Congressional District.
  • To determine who represents you, click here, and enter your zip code under “Find Your Representative” (top left corner)

2.  Does your issue involve a federal agency?

  • Unless your issue or concern involves a federal agency, there is little that my office can do to assist you.  Issues such as child support, motor vehicle registration, loss of driving privileges, DSS assistance, state and local taxes, etc., are state issues that involve North Carolina state agencies.   To obtain assistance with these matters, please contact your North Carolina state representative.  To find out who represents you in the North Carolina General Assembly, click here. (bottom right corner)

3.     Does your issue or concern involve a legal matter; civil or criminal?

  • If your issue or concern involves a legal matter (i.e., child custody, divorce, criminal or civil trial, imprisonment, etc.) our office will not be able to assist you.
  • Nor, can our office recommend an attorney or firm for legal representation.  If you are trying to obtain legal representation, you might consider contacting the NC Lawyer Referral Service at 1-800-662-7660, or go to NC Find-a-Lawyer (both services are sponsored by the North Carolina Bar Association).
