Cardin, Mikulski Announce Almost $300,000 in Federal Funds to House of Ruth for Transitional Housing Assistance to Aid Victims of Domestic Violence, Abuse

WASHINGTON -- U.S Senators Ben Cardin and Barbara A. Mikulski (both D-MD) today announced that the U.S Department of Justice (DoJ) has awarded the House of Ruth a $299,988 Transitional Housing Assistance Grant to provide assistance to victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking.  The House of Ruth will use the grant to provide domestic violence victims with safe, reliable, and flexible short and long-term housing, supportive services and crisis intervention.

“The House of Ruth is a place of last resort for victims of domestic violence in the Baltimore area. The House of Ruth provides, short-term emergency shelter, long-term transitional shelter, as well as programs to help victims break the cycle of abuse and realize their full potential.  I applaud the life-saving work done by the House of Ruth and I am pleased that these federal dollars will help make that possible,” said Senator Cardin.

“I have zero tolerance for domestic violence. As a social worker, I’ve seen first-hand how domestic violence hurts children and destroys families,” said Senator Mikulski, Chairwoman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice and Science which funds the DOJ. “These funds in the federal checkbook meet a compelling human need, protecting victims, helping families heal and rebuilding lives. I will continue to fight for families and defend them from continued violence and abuse.”     

The House of Ruth offers victims of domestic violence and abuse housing services and/or supportive services for an anticipated minimum length stay of six months and a maximum length stay of 24 months.   In announcing the grant, the DoJ stated that the House of Ruth was selected to receive this grant based on the “wide range of flexible and optional services that reflect the differences and individual needs of victims and that allow victims to choose the course of action that is best for them.”
