Labor

Employee Free Choice Act:

Over the past 30 years, labor union membership has been cut in half.  This decline has caused an imbalance between management and the labor force.  An indicator of this imbalance has been the divergence of wages versus productivity.  Since the 1970s, the productivity of the American workforce has consistently risen, however wages have not increased at the same rate.  In fact, over the past several years wages have remained stagnant.

In the 111th Congress, I was an original cosponsor of the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA), H.R. 1409.  This legislation is critical to bolster the competiveness of our workforce.  Current law enables employers to block the formation of labor unions, suppress wages and prevent employees from benefiting from collective bargaining.

Unfortunately, a disturbing amount of misinformation is being spread about EFCA.  Most importantly, this bill does not remove workers’ right to a secret ballot.

Workplace Safety:

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, each day an average of 16 workers die and approximately 11,200 private-sector workers suffer from a nonfatal work-related injury or illness.   While progress has been made over the past decades, these statistics remain unacceptable and steps must be taken to increase workplace safety and health standards.

I am a strong supporter of bolstering funding for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.  These important government agencies are at the forefront of ensuring the safety of our nation’s workforce.  It is time that we make workplace safety and health a higher priority in order to reduce the instances of death and injury on the job.
