Second Amendment

The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution states that, “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”  The meaning of this amendment seems very clear to me, and to the United States Supreme Court, that Congress shall not infringe on the individual right of the people to own firearms.

Although there are many opinions offered about this constitutional right, the fact remains that the founders of our republic intended for people to protect themselves from the threat of government oppression and intrusion.  The Second Amendment enshrines in the social conscience of our nation the most basic of individual rights, to have the means and opportunity to protect yourself and your property from those who would do you harm, or who wish to take away your rights and liberties.

While in the Florida House of Representatives I fought for the rights of gun owners and sponsored commonsense legislation such as HB 177 that protected the privacy of those citizens who own guns.  Rest assured, as your representative in Congress, I will continue to be an advocate for the right of the people to keep and bear arms, just as the founders intended.
