Washington has embarked on an out of control spending spree that has failed to create jobs or grow the economy, and has only led to an over $15 trillion debt – which translates to more than $40,000 per person across the country, $1.3 trillion deficit, and our nation borrowing over 40 cents on every dollar we spend.

For the sake of our children and grandchildren, it is imperative that we put an end to this reckless government spending and change course once and for all. I have supported several pieces of legislation in the House that would cut trillions in government spending so that we can begin to reduce our debt, grow the economy, and create jobs, including: H.R. 1, which would have funded the government at $100 billion less than the amount President Obama requested in his FY11 budget, and cut more than $60 billion than was spent in FY10; H.Con.Res. 34, the FY12 Budget Resolution, which cuts $6.2 trillion in government spending over the next decade compared to the President’s budget. It brings government spending to below 20 percent of the size of the economy and reaches primary budget balance in 2015; and during the recent debt debate, I voted in favor of the Cut, Cap, and Balance Act and the Budget Control Act which cuts $2.1 trillion over 10 years and imposes enforceable spending caps to force the government to live within its means.

While cutting government spending may be difficult at times, it is necessary if we want to see our economy turn around and thrive once again.

In addition to spending cuts, I believe that adopting a Balanced Budget Amendment is necessary to get our fiscal house back in order. I am a co-sponsor of the Balanced Budget Amendment that will force Washington to live within its means, just like our Commonwealth, businesses, and families do every day. The Balanced Budget Amendment represents the type of fundamental reform we need to end the nation’s debt and deficit spending problems.
