GOP Rhetoric on Energy Doesn't Match Their 'None of the Above' Record

House Republicans have been making partisan and inaccurate attacks on the Obama Administration's swift response to the BP Oil Spill in the Gulf.  The Republican leadership has consistently opposed and voted against bills to:

  • strengthen our national security by reducing our dependence on foreign oil,
  • create skilled new American clean energy jobs that can't be outsourced,
  • boost American innovation to invent and build the clean energy technology that will power the world, and
  • hold Big Oil accountable to explore and produce domestic energy on already leased lands, at competitive prices, in an clean and safe manner.

Despite Republicans' claims to support renewable energy and reducing American dependence on foreign oil, their votes support returning to the Bush Administration's “drill-only” energy policy that led to record profits for Big Oil, even greater U.S. dependence on oil from the Middle East, and record energy costs for America's working families.

Just yesterday, Republicans demonstrated their allegiance to special interests by offering a poison pill motion to the Home Star legislation - demonstrating, once again, that they are not serious about addressing energy independence or the creation of clean energy jobs.  On final passage, only 12 Republicans joined 234 Democrats to support the Home Star bill, which will create nearly 168,000 jobs in construction, manufacturing, and retail; and cut costs for consumers, decreasing energy bills by up to $500 per year for 3 million families.
