About Northwest Washington

Northwest Washington provides an escape from the state’s bustling urban areas, offering recreation, relaxation and sightseeing in the several communities and recreational areas of Snohomish, Skagit and Whatcom Counties. A variety of festivals and special events dot the calendar year-round. Two of the most well-known and popular are the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival and the Bellingham Ski-to-Sea Festival.

Snohomish County is a hub for the aerospace economy in Washington state. Everett is home to Boeing’s largest site, whose main assembly building has been named the largest building in the world by volume by the Guinness Book of World Records. The 30,000 workers at Boeing’s Everett facility build the company’s commercial aviation planes including the 747, 767, 777, and the new Dreamliner.

The Northwest region also encompasses Island and San Juan counties and extends west from the crest of the Cascade Mountains to northern Puget Sound. Northwest Washington offers easy access to the San Juan Islands, the North Cascade Mountains, the North Cascades National Park, and British Columbia. The city of Blaine, at the northernmost part of Whatcom County on the Canadian border, is the shared home of the International Peace Arch and home to the two main West Coast ports of entry between the United States and Canada.

Also located in the Northwest corner of Washington is Point Roberts, a Whatcom County community unattached to the continental United States mainland. Point Roberts stretches across nearly five-square-miles on the southernmost point of Tsawwassen Peninsula, British Columbia. The town is a popular tourist destination known for its natural beauty and marina community. Along with the San Juan Islands, Point Roberts is regarded as one of the best places for shore-based Orca whale watching in the world.

Northwest Washington is host to boat builders of all kinds, state-of-the-art lumber mills, as well as many other industries. The region is also one of the most productive farming areas in the state, with specialty crops being grown for export all over the world. Top specialty crops include raspberries, potatoes and blueberries, and milk is the number one commodity produced in these three Northwest Washington counties.
