About North Central Washington

With a rich history of tree-fruit production, North Central Washington provides the world with apples, pears and cherries. Visitors come from far and wide to take advantage of the region’s many recreational opportunities, vibrant communities and breathtaking scenery. The region encompasses Okanogan, Chelan and Douglas counties as well as the Lake Chelan National Recreation Area and parts of the North Cascades National Park and Wenatchee National Forest.

The Devils Gulch mountain bike trail, located in the Wenatchee National Forest, is one of the premier downhill rides in the state of Washington. This ride attracts thousands of mountain bikers from Seattle and elsewhere each year. Another major outdoors destination in North Central Washington is the Wenatchee River, which is one of the state’s most popular rivers for whitewater rafting. Lake Chelan, at 55 miles long, is the largest natural lake in Washington state and the third deepest in the country.

North Central Washington is home to the well-known city of Leavenworth, which was remodeled from a struggling historic timber community in 1962 to a Bavarian-style village to revitalize its economy. Leavenworth’s annual Oktoberfest celebration attracts tens of thousands of people to the town each fall.

The City of East Wenatchee in Douglas County made history on October 5, 1931, when it became the landing site for the first non-stop flight across the Pacific Ocean. Clyde Pangborn landed in East Wenatchee 41 hours and 15 minutes after taking off from Samishiro Beach, Japan.
