Johanns Tours Flood Affected Areas In Ft. Calhoun, South Sioux City

WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Mike Johanns (R-Neb.) today visited flood affected areas near Ft. Calhoun and those bracing for flood waters in South Sioux City and northeast Nebraska. Johanns met with local residents and city officials at both stops who are preparing for record flooding along the Missouri River basin.

“The impact along the Missouri has already been devastating,” said Johanns. “Not only are homes and businesses flooded, but it’s clear that thousands of acres of crops won't be planted at all this year. State and local officials are doing a great job informing people and preparing the region for what is to come under very difficult circumstances. I intend to do all I can to ascertain why it took so long to release water upstream. I will continue to stay fully engaged with state and local officials to assist in any way I can.”

“Most importantly, I know that Nebraskans will pull together, as we always do, when faced with a crisis. This has the potential to test our collective resolve, but I have every confidence Nebraskans will rise to the challenge.”

On May 25, Gov. Heineman issued an Emergency Disaster Proclamation in anticipation of flooding along the Missouri and Platte rivers. Higher than normal snowmelt from the mountains and extraordinary rainfall this spring have resulted in record flows and flooding. Significant flooding has already begun and is expected to continue into the summer.

Johanns’ office has set up a webpage for information about evacuation plans, shelters and flood protection efforts.
