Tom Carper, U.S. Senator for Delaware

An internship in Senator Carper's office is a unique learning experience that provides students with the opportunity to observe democracy at work and participate in the legislative process. Interns develop political knowledge and practical skills that will serve them well in future professional pursuits.

The intern program is open to qualified undergraduate and graduate students, as well as recent graduates, who have a strong interest in public service and government and have achieved academic excellence. Preference is given to Delaware residents. Internships are available in Washington, D.C., Wilmington, Dover, and Georgetown for Fall, Spring, and Summer terms.

Washington, D.C. Program

Interns in Washington, D.C. interact with me, my staff and Delaware constituents on a daily basis. They receive an inside look at the legislative process by attending hearings and performing research on a wide variety of legislative issues, with full access to the Library of Congress and Congressional Research Service. They also gain valuable experience by monitoring media outlets for daily developments, preparing briefing books, assisting with U.S. Capitol tours for constituent groups and providing general office support.

Delaware Program

Interns in Delaware interact with me, my staff and Delaware constituents on a daily basis. They support office staff by addressing constituent concerns and legislative issues, and by monitoring news outlets for daily developments. Interns have the opportunity to attend events, such as the state fair and town hall meetings. They also have full access to the Library of Congress and Congressional Research Service.

How to Apply

To be considered for an internship, applicants must email, mail, or fax a completed application package to the desired office location by the deadline listed below. The application package includes a cover letter, resume, one letter of recommendation, a writing sample, and completed application form, which can be found below.

Please note that mail sent to the Washington, D.C. office is often delayed due to U.S. Senate mail screening procedures. For that reason, students applying to intern in the Washington, D.C. office should submit their completed application by fax or by email to interncoordinator@carper.senate.gov.
