Today, Congressman Gowdy (SC-4) released the following statement after the House of Representatives vote to hold the Attorney General in both civil and criminal contempt of Congress for his failure to comply with a lawful subpoena request on October 12, 2011 from the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.
“This is a sad day for those of us who believe in the rule of law. The same rules should apply to everyone and the chief law enforcement officer has failed to do so.”
“We should not have to settle, compromise, or find any “extraordinary circumstance” on the amount of documents we are entitled to. We are wrong if we settle for anything less than all the facts.”
“I would prefer the documents and the truth over a vote on contempt for Congress. The Attorney General has chosen not to do the right thing, so we must. I want all the truth and will settle for nothing less.”
Rep. Gowdy serves on the House Committees on the Judiciary and Oversight and Government Reform; both committees have been investigating the failed Fast and Furious program for 18 months.
