General Services Administration
In April 2012, the inspector general of the General Services Administration uncovered outrageous spending by the agency on a conference held in Las Vegas two years before. The Chairman and Ranking Member of the Committee immediately asked GSA Acting Administrator Daniel Tangherlini to conduct a top-to-bottom review of the agency's policies and operations to determine if other areas within the agency were wasting taxpayer dollars. They also asked GSA's inspector general to investigate previous conferences and travel expenses, as well as acquisition practices, and abuse of agency purchase cards.
The Committee’s ongoing oversight of GSA covers the agency’s effort to merge nine different procurement data systems used by government contracting officers, contractors, and the general public; the level of fees GSA collects from agencies for use of its contract schedules; why agencies were slow to transition to GSA’s suite of telecommunications contracts, known as the Networx program; GSA’s leading role in implementing the federal government’s move towards cloud technology and its collaboration with other agencies to ensure the cloud systems are secure; and GSA’s management of the federal government’s real property.
