U.S. Rep. Gary Peters applauds Troy City Council for reconsidering and voting to accept $6.2 million in Federal funds to build Transit Center

Peters credits families and business community in Troy with creating necessary pressure on City Council

TROY, MI - Today U.S. Rep. Gary Peters applauded the Troy City Council for reconsidering and voting to accept $6.2 million in job creating federal transit funds. These dollars will do much more than just build a transit center - they will connect Troy to the greater regional transit plan and create new jobs building and maintaining the station. As time goes by, this new station will also attract new private investment in the area around the transit center for years to come. In his statement, Peters credited the families of Troy and the local business community for creating the pressure necessary to convince Troy City Council to accept these funds.

"Investing in a regional transit plan for the Greater Detroit area is critical in spurring economic development, creating jobs and building our way out of these tough economic times,"said U.S. Rep. Gary Peters. "The decision to accept these funds moves our region closer to a broader Greater Detroit transit plan. I think credit is due to the business community and the families of Troy that refused to take no for an answer from City Council."

In 2009, U.S. Rep. Gary Peters voted for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to make job creating infrastructure investments in the Greater Detroit region. Because of his vote and his work to develop a regional transit system, Troy received an $8.4 million federal grant to build the Troy Transit center. When Troy City Council initially voted against accepting these funds in December, U.S. Rep. Peters wrote Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and Governor Rick Snyder and asked them to keep these funds in the Greater Detroit area.
