CONGRESSMAN GARY PETERS TAKES OATH, OFFICIALLY ASSUMES OFFICE

Peters: Congress Must Work Together to Create Effective Economic Policies

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Gary Peters today officially became Oakland County’s newest United States Representative after being sworn-in by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.  After taking the Congressional Oath of Office, Peters called for Members of all political stripes to ensure that the beginning of the new Congress ushers in a new era of bipartisanship and for Congress to hit the ground running to pass legislation to strengthen the economy.

“Now that the 111th Congress has convened, we must begin work immediately to create new jobs and foster a national economic recovery,” said Rep. Peters following his swearing-in.  “We face unprecedented economic challenges.  Democrats and Republicans must avoid ideological division and political gamesmanship and work together to create practical, effective policies that benefit struggling middle class families.  It is my sincere hope that the 111th Congress marks a new era of bipartisan cooperation, and that the new Congress will be united as we work to overcome our nation’s economic challenges.”

Peters was elected to Congress in November by a 10-point margin to become, according to the Detroit Free Press, the first Democrat to represent his district in over 100 years.

“The people of the Ninth District have entrusted me to be their advocate in Washington,” said Rep. Peters.  “Effectively representing my district will require ongoing communication with residents.  I believe that political leaders need to do at least as much listening as they do talking.  That’s why I will be back in Oakland County virtually every week to have the opportunity to hear from residents directly.”

Peters’ daughters Alana and Madeleine joined him today on the House floor as he took the oath of office.  His wife, Colleen, son Gary, Jr., sister Gigi and father Herbert also attended today’s swearing-in ceremony.

Peters, a fifth generation Oakland County resident, lives in Bloomfield Hills.  His daughters attend Bloomfield Hills public schools.  Prior to his election to Congress, Peters served as the Griffin Chair of American Government at Central Michigan University.  Peters has also served as the Commissioner of the Michigan State Lottery and as a Michigan State Senator.
