Financial Services

The financial collapse of Wall Street and the government bailouts that followed contributed to the greatest economic downturn since the Great Depression.  The mission of our committee is to incorporate sound economic principles in response to the weaknesses of the U.S. financial marketplace.

During the 111th Congress, I was appointed to serve on the House-Senate conference on the Dodd-Frank financial overhaul package and sponsored several amendments aimed at protecting small businesses, preserving the competitiveness of U.S. markets, and sustaining access to credit.  I’ve also sponsored reforms to end the bailouts of Fannie and Freddie and increase accountability of the two mortgage giants.

As chair of the Subcommittee on Insurance, Housing and Community Opportunity, I have led efforts to restore stability to the housing market and reduce government barriers to private investment.  I’ve also authored legislation -- now law -- to tackle mortgage fraud and fund housing counseling efforts that reach out to troubled homeowners.

Lastly, as a founding member and co-chair of both the House Financial and Economic Literacy Caucus and the Congressional Caucus on Homelessness, I work with members on both sides of the aisle to promote exemplary programs and heighten awareness of issues related to financial education and homelessness.
