Massapequa Park, New York – In his continuing effort to promote September 11th as a national day of voluntary service, charity and good deeds, Congressman Peter T. King (R-Seaford) will be holding his 3rd annual blood drive on Friday, September 11th, 2009, from 10 a.m.- 3:30 p.m. at his District Office, 1003 Park Boulevard, Massapequa Park. The blood drive will be administered by Long Island Blood Services.

“This blood drive is a way to encourage people to perform one special deed on September 11th, as a way to honor the victims and heroes of that tragic day,” Congressman King stated. “It is also a way to rekindle the spirit of unity and compassion that existed in the nation after the tragedy.”

According to Congressman King, the Long Island region suffers from a shortage of local blood donors, as only 2% of the region’s population donates blood each year, compared to the national average of 5%.

Donors must be age 16-75 (16 with written parental permission; 76+ accepted with doctor’s note), weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in general good health. At the time of donation, donors must have either photo or signed identification and know their social security number.

Congressman King initiated this blood drive to encourage people everywhere to set aside time every September 11th to perform good deeds of their choice to help others in need.

Almost 100 pints of blood have been collected in the first two years of the blood drive.

To schedule an appointment to donate blood, please contact Congressman King’s Massapequa Park District Office at (516 or 631) 541-4225.
