Ryan budget's impact on Medicare
October 17, 2012
Dear Friends,
There’s been a lot of talk this year about how the Ryan/Republican budget would impact vital services for middle-class families, seniors and children.
We know it would end the guarantee of Medicare and increase health care costs to seniors, significantly alter Medi-Cal, eliminate funding for public broadcasting, and cut Pell grants for college, while at the same time it would lower taxes for people who earn more than $1 million per year.
Now, a new official congressional report was just released showing how the Ryan/Republican budget will hurt seniors right here in our district (NY-15):
- Increase prescription drug costs for 5,100 Medicare beneficiaries in the district who enter the Part D donut hole, forcing them to pay an extra $47 million for drugs over the next decade.
- Eliminate new preventive care benefits for 88,000 Medicare beneficiaries in the district.
- Force 88,000 Medicare beneficiaries in the district who are currently enrolled in traditional Medicare to pay thousands of dollars more in premiums to remain in traditional Medicare after Medicare becomes a voucher program.
- Reduce coverage for 40,200 Medicare beneficiaries who rely on Medicaid to supplement their Medicare coverage, potentially denying them over $1.41 billion in health benefits.
- Jeopardize nursing home care for 2,300 district residents whose expenses are paid by Medicaid.
- Raise food costs for 27,400 district households with seniors who rely on food stamps by as much as $1,100 per year or eliminate food assistance for many of these households entirely.
- Threaten affordable housing programs that provide rental support for 8,300 district households with seniors.
- Place 77,000 district seniors at increased risk of fraud, scams, and elder abuse by cutting as much as $6 billion in funding for federal consumer protection and law enforcement.

It speaks for itself: Rep. Paul Ryan’s budget threatens critical services to seniors in our community. What do you think?
I’m fighting to make sure Congress stands up for seniors and our children and makes everybody pay their fair share, not give more tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans.
