Creating Jobs, Educating Our Youth

June 1, 2012
Dear Friends,

The May jobs numbers are in, and while the nation added 69,000 jobs and private sector job growth continued for the 27th consecutive month, the unemployment rate grew for the first time in a year. While there are only 43 legislative days left this Congress, my Republican colleagues have no plan to create jobs, so they spent this week creating legislation that would further restrict women's already endangered right to choose. Instead of playing political games, I hope they would join my Democratic Colleagues to pass bills such as the President's Jobs Act, which will cut the payroll tax in half for 98% of American businesses and fund job training to help unemployed Americans find careers.

As you know, education is a key factor in a prosperous nation. That is why on June 4th, I will be hosting an education event to provide students, their parents, and educators the tools and information they need to make college a reality for students in our district. The program includes a keynote address from Martha J. Kanter, Under Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education. There will also be a Federal Student Aid representative to discuss the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the net college cost calculator. The event will be held on Monday, June 4th, from 12:30pm-2:30pm, at The Frederick Douglass Academy Auditorium (2581 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard). I hope you will join us. LGBT Pride Month

Sixty years ago, draconian hate laws made interracial marriage illegal in this country. Today, similar laws bar LGBT individuals from expressing their love to one another. As we recognize National LGBT Pride Month, I am glad to stand for equality, as I have in years past. I will continue to work with my Colleagues to see that the rights of LGBT Americans are no longer trampled on by backward social opinions.
