End Gun Violence

July 20, 2012
Dear Friends,

Friday morning we learned of the horrific and senseless act of violence that occurred in a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, in which at least 12 innocent lives were lost and more than 50 people were wounded. I am deeply saddened as I join the nation in profound sorrow and shock. Such violent actions have absolutely no place in our society and will not be condoned. No civilized country has a complete disregard for the dangers of firearms and automatic weapons. New York has some of the strictest gun rules in the country. Yet, day after day we still find ourselves dealing with crimes directly related to illegal guns that are trafficked into the city. We must confront the issue of gun violence in our communities. We need to rise above this tragedy to work together in an effort to make sure not even one more innocent individual falls victim to a gun shot. May peace be with the family and friends who lost their innocent loved ones. Our prayers are with those who were wounded.

CHARLIE'S OP-ED:
Tax Justice: Our Nation Is At Stake

President Barack Obama recently called on Congress to extend tax breaks for America's 114 million middle-income families that make less than $250,000. The President has also proposed to let the Bush era's high-income tax cuts expire at the end of this year and use the resulting $1 trillion in savings over 10 years as part of a balanced plan to reduce deficits and debt and put the nation in the right direction towards shoring up our national budget. Read the entire op-ed here.
