Passing a Responsible Federal Budget

Washington, Mar 27, 2009 -

There is no doubt that the American economy is going through a rough patch.  Jobs are being lost, people are being forced out of their homes, and retirement plans for many have been hard hit.  In these challenging times Americans deserve a federal budget that controls spending, prioritizes limited resources and gives hard-working people the incentives they need to create jobs and stimulate the economy.  Just like families making their weekly budget sitting around the kitchen table, Washington, D.C. must tighten its belt and pass a responsible budget that reflect today’s challenges.

Unfortunately, the plan recently presented by those who control Congress spends too much, taxes too much and borrows too much.  When people in Central Washington have a smaller paycheck, or no paycheck at all, the last thing they need is more taxes and increased energy costs.  With a massive new $2 trillion dollar energy tax on top of bailout after bailout, I am concerned that this tax and spend policy will do further harm to the American economy.

The good news is that I have joined my Republican colleagues in Congress to draft a plan that offers another option, curbs spending, creates jobs, lowers taxes and controls debt.  Instead of handouts, our budget provides a hand up to help those Americans looking to find a job or purchase a new home.  Our plan provides tax credits toward the purchase of a new home or to refinance your existing house, lowers rates for all taxpayers, and funds investments that will help create public sector jobs, not grow government bureaucracy.  I believe it is a better solution for America.

Our plan also addresses our most pressing national challenges; boosting access to affordable health care, protecting Medicare and Social Security for Washington seniors, and providing more American made energy to keep prices low.  I understand that most Central Washington residents are concerned about keeping their jobs, paying for health care and protecting their children, which is why I support a responsible budget that meets the needs of you and your family.

Congress must get back to the basic principles of limited government and personal responsibility that made our nation strong and prosperous.  It is my hope that Congress can come together and work to pass a responsible budget that puts families first and America back on the road to recovery.
